While sending out email to lists of email addresses that can utilize faculty, staff, students, alumni or others, please abide by some rules brought to you by the Federal Trade Commission.
CAN-SPAM Act
Each email in violation of the CAN-SPAM Act can be penalized of up to $40,654, so non-compliance is costly. But following the law isn’t complicated.
Some guidelines to follow
- Don't use misleading header information.
- Don't use deceptive subject lines.
- Identify the message as an ad. Be specific about who you are and why are you emailing.
- Tell recipients where you're located.
- Tell recipients how to opt-out of receiving future emails from you.
- Honor opt-out requests promptly.
- Monitor what others are doing on your behalf.
